Examination score is a good yardstick for measuring the academic ability of the students, but the overall performance of students should not be subjected to this method of measurement alone. Though the ulterior motive for a student being in school is for academics, a student facing only academics during school years will be limiting their learning to only academics.
However, we have a lot of factors that can probably make a student perform poorly, but regrettably, our society always considers examination scores alone without evaluating and considering all these under listed factors that can also account for student’s performance.
Truly, examination score is among the ways to test intelligent quotient and knowledge base of students, but examination score as a manner of testing overall student performance is very subjective and good for short-term gain and assessment. But what students will deliver in the long run positively and productively is beyond the capacity of the examination score.
Let us see some factors that always determine and influence whether students will perform excellently or poorly;
Education standard in the country: In a country that education standard is low, the standard of the education may directly or indirectly affect the performance of the student. And the standard of education in any country can only be increased by government of the country by providing basic needs for student to excel in their academic pursuit such as; books, conducive environment, social amenities to enhance academic standard in the country.
Quality of teachers: One of the central element that determines whether the student will perform excellently are the teachers. This is by ensuring that students are taught professionally, and they really understand and get what the lecture is all about. But surprisingly, some teachers do not even get or understand the content of knowledge that they are trying to pass to students, passing knowledge to students with unqualified teachers will be disastrous on the performance of students that served as victims under the inexperienced teachers.
Environment: Among the prominent factors that also contribute to the success or failure of students in school is the environment that such students living. Some environments are not conducive to students at all, such as environments that entail, raucous noise, bad peer groups, and the likes.
However, other tests can be added to an examination in evaluating student performance;
Testing of overall goals of education in that country, by evaluating the aims and objectives education want to achieve in that country and determine whether students meet up with such goals.
Aligning the performance with overall desired goals, it may not possible for students to be good in all areas, but by aligning their performance with overall desires of education, they will always outshine and outdo one another in different areas.
