There is nothing complex than trying to be someone else. Being someone else takes two things; telling yourself that you are not worth emulating and pretending to others that you are someone else. While the latter might be pretty much easier than the former, both still have a damaging effect on one’s confidence. Everybody is good at different things, and this difference is what makes us unique, so trying to be someone else only means leaving your uniqueness to try being something you are not. Therefore, rather than comparing your children with that your neighbor’s kids that constantly get a higher grade, appreciate the things your child is good at because;
It makes them creative thinkers: Being original at what you do makes your work extraordinary. Consider the life of Leonardo da Vinci, who was an exemplar of art, sculpture, to mention a few. He died over 400 years ago, but his artwork remains highly valued. This is because he was original to his true nature, which is to create and solve. Children have an undying ability of creativity in them, and most times, they show it in different ways. The job of the parent is to identify the creative part of the children and provide an environment to foster its growth.
Self-learned things stay with them longer: Have you ever wondered why students are encouraged to learn things on their own? Well, the reason is that what they learn themselves tend to stick with them longer than when they are being taught, and this is because they learn in the easiest possible way, according to their own understanding. This is why it is encouraged to allow your children to learn things on their own, but this does not mean that they should not be assisted occasionally.
They will not be scared to experiment: The ability to try something new despite the uncertainty of success is a show of courage, and sometimes, courage is all you need to move from one point in life to another. This is the kind of mindset that should be embedded in our children which makes them fearless in trying out new things like it is popularly said; you never know what you will find until you seek.
